6 Easy Ways to Release Negative Energy and Restore Inner Balance
Having a build-up of discordant, low-vibrational energy in our auric field is similar to wearing a thick fur coat in the middle of summer. It makes our skin itchy, weighs us down, and certainly doesn’t serve a purpose in hot weather. When we finally take it off, we remember how natural and freeing it feels to move without the weight.
It’s time to let go of that which doesn’t serve us. Energetic clutter consists of false beliefs, fear, insecurity or other negative feelings we harbour about ourselves and/or others that we carry around. This controls how we relate to ourselves and what we experience throughout our lives. This negative energy is what causes us suffering, causes us to continue to be stuck in a spiral of negativity.
Releasing negative energy does not have to be a complex process. It can be simple and woven into everyday life. The six practices below are powerful and easy ways to lighten our field and reset body and mind.

1. Shower Meditation with Himalayan Salt Cleansing
Water is one of the most effective natural cleansers for the energetic body. Salt purifies. It’s a natural ioniser that releases negative ions when dissolved, helping neutralise toxins and shift stagnant or heavy energy.
It’s the most natural, well-known anti-bacterial. Think about when you were young, you had a sore throat and your mother made up a concoction of salt water to gargle. You could possibly feel the effects almost immediately. The reason for this is that salt has anti-bacterial properties that dehydrates bacteria, making it difficult for them to survive or multiply.
Across many cultures, salt also symbolises protection and cleansing. It absorbs impurities. Himalayan salt, especially, is a favourite, having formed deep within the earth and therefore having that extra grounding properties (Of course, any type salt will do for this practice).
2. Full-Body Shaking (The “Dog Shake” Technique)
Animals instinctively shake their bodies as a natural way for their nervous system to reset. When we see a dog shake after a stressful or exciting event, its purpose is to discharge excess adrenaline and calm their nervous system. After a bath, in addition to removing water, shaking also resets their sensory system.
It’s an interesting fact that animals don’t suppress reactions the way humans do. They complete the stress response and move on. So the act of shaking lets go of physical and emotional build-up quickly and the stress isn’t left to linger in their body.
The human nervous system can benefit from this method too. Full-body shaking is a simple yet incredibly effective way to discharge emotional stagnation, stress hormones, energetic residue and physical tension stored in muscles.

3. Breath Release Technique (4–8 Breathing)
Our breath is one of the most powerful tools for emotional cleansing. Slow, intentional breathing with the longer exhales activates the parasympathetic nervous system. This signals safety and calm to our body.
The longer exhale helps the body release what it is holding onto, bringing it back into balance and settling the mind. It can be done any time needed. The act of this type of controlled breathing grounds us in the present moment so that we can shift out of past or future worries and into the present with focus.
Method:
Inhale for 4 counts, imagining yourself drawing in pure, loving, light energy.
Exhale for 8 counts and feel any negative emotions (pressure, fear, anxiety, etc.) leaving your body.
Consciously feel the lightness in your field now.
4. Sound Clearing Ritual
Sound carries frequency, and frequency shifts energy. That’s why ancient cultures used bells, drums, chanting, and bowls to cleanse sacred spaces. The same principles apply to our personal field. Our whole system is made up of the frequency of sound.
There’s so many sounds going on in the world during our day, creating so many emotional confusion and causing scattered energy. Focusing on a high-vibrational sound for up to an hour in the day is enough to shift our current state of negative emotions and create a more positive, powerful geometry of emotion in us.
5. Simple Writing for Emotional Release
Writing is a powerful way to externalise emotional weight. When transferring thoughts onto paper, the mind no longer needs to hold onto them. As a result, this act reduces the need for rumination and may provide clarity. Emotions become more manageable when they are named, witnessed and given a place to land. It also creates emotional distance.
Seeing your thoughts outside of yourself reminds you that you are not your worries. You are just the observer of them. From this space, there will be insight and self-compassion.
6. Divine Light Waterfall Meditation
Meditation feels pretty challenging when our minds are full of chatter - but this is often when it is most needed. Rather than resisting the thoughts, allow them to arise and pass without attachment. We are not our thoughts. We are merely witnessing them.
In this meditation, you are guided to visualise universal energy flowing through and all around you. The sensation is like sitting beneath a gentle, flowing waterfall in nature and allowing its currents to cascade over your body. A deeply renewing sensation.
Method:
Find a quiet spot. Close your eyes and take in a few slow breaths. Visualise, from above, a luminous white shower of Universal energy pouring down. See it entering through the crown of your head, cascading through your body and expanding throughout your entire energy field.
This sacred waterfall of divine light and grace moves through your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies, dissolving your old, heavy energetic imprints and returning them to the Earth to be lovingly received and transformed.
Method:
Write freely about your pain and anxiety, and what frustrates you. Don’t overthink this. Just let thoughts flow freely. Then, safely burn the paper as a symbolic act of release or you can tear the paper into pieces and bury it in the earth for the earth to transform the energy. The act of doing this will also give your subconscious mind a signal that the emotion is released.
Method:
Use a singing bowl or tuning forks, or listen to mantra chanting or binaural frequency sounds (to name just a few) as you go about your day, for example while working, studying or cooking.
The sound vibrations break up stagnant or dense energy and tones help realign your emotional and energetic rhythm. Focusing on certain sounds creates certain emotions in you, which alters the whole structure of your brain, body and cellular systems.
YouTube has many options to listen to. Feel free to get in touch if you need links to any of these online.
Method:
Stand with your feet apart and gently shake your hands, arms, head, torso and legs individually. Gradually build into a fuller, more natural shaking, such as a dog shaking water off itself.
After a few moments, slow down to a stop. You should feel tingling or a sense of lightness spreading through the body when you're done. Steady and ground yourself by imagining roots coming out of your feet and anchoring you into Mother Earth.
Method:
As you enter your shower, take a moment to breathe deeply and focus your intention. This can be along the lines of releasing the stress and emotional weight of what no longer serves you. Let the warm water relax your body as your breath slows and your awareness turns inward.
Take a small handful of fine Himalayan salt (or salt mixed with a little body oil) and gently massage it onto any areas of your body you feel called to - avoid sensitive areas. As you massage the salt, imagine it drawing out any heaviness, tension and stagnant energy. Also allow the salt to dissolve in your hands and sprinkle some at your feet.
Let the water wash the salt away, visualising anything that feels burdensome or out of alignment being released with the salt and water, flowing down the drain and leaving you feeling lighter and clearer.
